An antique Japanese satsuma tazza (compote) of rare and vigorous form. It has a scalloped bowl rather like chrysanthemum petals. The broad pedestal is pierced. It was hand thrown and slightly asymmetrical, having its own aethestic appeal. The Japanese appreciated asymmetry. No marks. The center design is that of a feudal lord or daimyo with an attendant kneeling next to him, perhaps bearing alarming tidings about the battle. An early Northern Sung (11-12th c.) white glaze jar with cover. This is a shining white glaze over a greyish biscuit. A direct descendent of the earlier Tang white glaze from the northern kilns. Sung ware were prized for the form and glaze. Both vessel rigidity and glaze control benefited from the higher temperatures (1200 Centigrade) of the kilns. An unusual blue & white Korean shoulder vase of powerful form in the meiping style. Flowing figure of a senjin or female immortal in a high waist Korean dress. Flowers on the back of the vase. Excellent detail. Porcelain is fine and white. Light blue reminiscent of some Arita. Mark of Chinese emperor Kang H'si (mark found sometimes on both Japanese & Korean ware) in a double circle.
