A serene contemplative buddha seated on a lotus throne dating to late Meiji era. He is most likely the Daibutsu in Kamakura. Nice ivory tone with a touch of yellow. A single character on the bottom. Carving is both graceful and fine. See the folds on the robe and the fingers. Also nice detail along the bottom edge. Includes fitted wooden stand. A faint age line on the bottom, not unusual for a solid block of ivory. ...click for details

A lovely Chinese embroidered purse with lots of "forbidden stitches" or Peking knots. The kidney shape is a traditional Chinese form with long draw strings and tassels.

4 by 3 inches. Very good condition with strong color.

A fine pair of antique Chinese kesi (kossu is Japanese term) tapestries of large size with gold and silver threads on silk. Theme is the woman warrior Mulan now made famous by Disney. It shows her receiving the sword from heaven and then fully outfitted for battle. In Chinese myths, supernatural qualities are attributed especially to the sword. This is an antique porcelain plaque showing the immortal Kwan-Yin (Guan-Yin, Kannon, Avalokitesvara)seated on a lotus dais with a disciple paying homage. According to Chinese legend, she is the goddess of mercy and the special goddess for women. While mostly engaged in doing good she is ranked right up there in terms of power and she always wins in any heavenly confrontation. A fine landscape fan painting by listed artist Zhu WenQing, a 19th century Wuxi artist. He was skilled in landscape, genre, flowers and birds. Full calligraphy poem on the reverse side by Yang JinXun. Both painting and calligraphy are dedicated to a friend. Both are signed and sealed. Dated summer of 1861.

A fine Edo period (1603-1868) or earlier iron tsuba of a classic form and with mixed metal decorations in gold and silver. A wonderful butterfly with dark patinated wings and with gold highlights. The spray of flowers in gold and silver. Those fierce samurai loved their flowers and butterflies! And the metal smiths were without equal working with mixed metals.

This is a fine Qing dynasty (Ch'ing) rank badge to be worn by a senior civil official. There is a lot of gold and silver metallic threads for highlight and ground. This is a genuine rank badge with the embroidered borders, (not a piece cut from a robe, for example). Very nice borders with longevity characters.

About 12 inches square backed on board and in very good condition with a little fading.

The early Japanese woodblock artists did many many famous bijin, or beauties. Kikugawa Eizan (1787-1867) was well known for his pictures of women and developed a style influenced by Hokusai and Utamaro. This picture of a geisha holding an incense pot has long flowing lines. It is framed in mahogoney, with his signature & seal. It is also rare due to the unusual size, which is a vertical diptych (double print), called kakemono.
