A large carved dingyao plate over 10" in diameter. Freely carved design of lotus blossoms in the center and conforming scroll on the rim band. Creamy glaze with a hint of butterscotch, sometimes known as tienbai (sweet white). Glaze pooling in the recesses, unglazed rim. A couple of tiny kiln imperfections (about 2 o'clock on the back) covered by the glaze, and a couple of black spots also under the glaze. Unglazed footrim. An unusual Ming dynasty (1368-1644)cizhou vase in double gourd shape. A simple plum blossom spray on the bottom and a short poem above. The poem celebrates the fragrant landscape forever and the seasonal renewal of the plants & flowers. A touch of nostalgia very typical of Ming literati.

12.5" tall and 7.5" diameter at large bulb. Very good condition. Nice creamy slip glaze with a hint of crackle. ...click for details

An early Northern Sung (11-12th c.) white glaze jar with cover. This is a shining white glaze over a greyish biscuit. A direct descendent of the earlier Tang white glaze from the northern kilns. Sung ware were prized for the form and glaze. Both vessel rigidity and glaze control benefited from the higher temperatures (1200 Centigrade) of the kilns. An elegant Song Dynasty (960-1279 ad) Cizhou jar with a petaled cover. A simple but vigorous bamboo sprig decorates the front. Good creamy color from the slip. Note: Cizhou decorations are prized for the free form brush painting on ceramic surface (just like calligraphy or painting on paper.)

A fine Northern Song (960-1127 a.d.) example of dingyao. A freely carved lotus blossom decorates the center. You can feel the lines soar. Well defined recessed footrim. 4.7" diameter and in great condition with no hairlines or cracks or repairs.

Genuine Song dingyao is pretty rare. This is an elegant example.
