This is a fine Qing dynasty (Ch'ing) rank badge to be worn by a senior civil official. There is a lot of gold and silver metallic threads for highlight and ground. This is a genuine rank badge with the embroidered borders, (not a piece cut from a robe, for example). Very nice borders with longevity characters.

About 12 inches square backed on board and in very good condition with a little fading.

A lovely Chinese embroidered purse with lots of "forbidden stitches" or Peking knots. The kidney shape is a traditional Chinese form with long draw strings and tassels.

4 by 3 inches. Very good condition with strong color.

This is a wonderful old French purse made from antique 19th century Chinese embroidery. Nice lively flower motif on the embroidery which also has lots of "forbidden stitches". The purse has colorful glass "jewels" around. It is lined with silk and has a silk pouch for a round mirror.
7 by 5 1/2 inches. Very good condition with nice color.

An Imperial 9 dragon embroidered robe with shimmering couched gold threads. The beautiful blue ground is for a 3rd rank prince. (See history snippet in rosemandarin.tuilleries.com for all ranks.) Actually there are 15 dragons total in the pattern or design (see below). The silk robe is a deep navy blue and quite large, 57 inches long with a 44 inch wide bottom, and about 85 inches cuff to cuff. The stitchery is very fine. A fine pair of antique Chinese kesi (kossu is Japanese term) tapestries of large size with gold and silver threads on silk. Theme is the woman warrior Mulan now made famous by Disney. It shows her receiving the sword from heaven and then fully outfitted for battle. In Chinese myths, supernatural qualities are attributed especially to the sword. This is a fine silk skirt with figural embroidery and vivid colors for a wedding, festival or special occasion. There are 2 very detailed figural panels with gold thread. Late Ch'ing (Qing) or early Republic of China period; about 100 years old. You see these panels now but seldomly intact on the original skirt. Very good condition with no staining. Since the skirt is used only on special occasions, it was put away at other times, and the colors are still good.
