Sold thank you.

This is a set of 3 Japanese temple bells each with an open mouthed active dragon dramatically set against a black ground. Thick lacquer work stands in relief. The metal is most likely brass, painted black inside. Each sounds a fine reverberating note. I'd say Meiji, maybe for export.

8.5", 7.7" and 5.8" diameters respectively. Some light wear as you can see from the picture, but they are all ...click for details

Sold thank you.

An elegant pair of slender satsuma vases with beautifully delineated and executed designs. The overall theme is the profuse hundred petal cherry blossoms of spring with plump Japanese bluebirds fluttering. These spring scenes are on the main body of the vase and two panels of the long neck. Separating them are narrow brocade and diaper bands highlighted by jewel effect enamel accents. The inner flaring rim is also decorated by gold scrolls with jewels"". There is no mark on the ba ...click for details

A fine pair of Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912)Nabeshima plates. A single large blossom (looks like a big wild rose or maybe a hibiscus) on each plate. Typical Nabeshima flat rims. The fine Nabeshima plates usually have decorations on the outside, and this pair has stylized floral theme. Wonderful saphire blues shading from dark to light very difficult to achieve in the kiln.

7" diameter. No chips hairlin ...click for details

A fine Edo period (1603-1868) or earlier iron tsuba of a classic form and with mixed metal decorations in gold and silver. A wonderful butterfly with dark patinated wings and with gold highlights. The spray of flowers in gold and silver. Those fierce samurai loved their flowers and butterflies! And the metal smiths were without equal working with mixed metals.

$1250.00

An antique Japanese satsuma tazza (compote) of rare and vigorous form. It has a scalloped bowl rather like chrysanthemum petals. The broad pedestal is pierced. It was hand thrown and slightly asymmetrical, having its own aethestic appeal. The Japanese appreciated asymmetry. No marks. The center design is that of a feudal lord or daimyo with an attendant kneeling next to him, perhaps bearing alarming tidings about the battle. There are gold squares and diamonds scattered about as well a ...click for details

Sold thank you.

A striking Meiji era (1868-1912) Japanese vase with a deep cobalt enamel blue ground. Two very lively dragons are coiled around each other on each side of the vase. These dragons are in relief on the white biscuit. Outstanding quality and sharpness of detail is such that I'd almost say Hirado. In any case it is excellent Arita ware. No marks anywhere quite normal for this type of ware.

This is one of those fantastic satsuma masterpieces where every mm of space is filled in by a wonderful design, known as "ten thousand cranes". Those tiny cranes were laid on with thick enamel that stand out in relief... easily seen in the larger detail. There are 4 larger golden cranes around. While sumptuous the colors are not overly gaudy. Gold trimmed rims to protect the porcelain. Meiji (1868-1912) era. ...click for details
