A fine Chinese sweetmeat or candy container from the early turn of the century 1880-1920s. It is of cylindrical form with 2 stacking layers and a cover, on a pedestal. The cover has a beautiful water landscape with a cute fisherman in a boat with his pole. It is an idyllic Chinese scholar scene. Look at the exceptional detail in the close-up. A fine Guangxu era (1875-1908) Da Ya Zhai motif bowl of large size and good markings. And there is a gently lobed rim. The hand painted floral theme with the black bird was well executed with good detail. See the thickness of the enamel and the fine lines in the close-up pics. The aubergine ground signifies the winter season. The interior is turquoise.

The poem alludes to the pleasures and the freedom of enjoying the autumn pleasure on Feng Lai, a mythical Island over the ocean inhabited by immortal beings who have endless banquets and poetry contests. A large bowl from the Christie's 1986 auction of the Nanking (Hatcher) Cargo recovered from the 1752 shipwreck of the Dutch India Company ship in the South China Sea. The bowl interior has underglaze blue floral decorations typical of the late Ming (1368-1644)to Early Ching (1644-1911) period. (And the pattern area is pretty large. A Qing (Ch'ing) dynasty gold gilt candle holder with a wonderfully carved dragon with a phoenix below. The dragon head is fully in relief and the scales are also meticulously done. Carved cloud motif above the head just below the holder. Reticulated open work at the dragon head and phoenix legs. Gold leaf on black enamel coiling dragon on the lower portion of the candle stick including the cirular base.

A double dragon and phoenix polychrome (wucai) bowl with a further dragon medallion inside. There are underglazed double rings around the rim, the foot and the bottom reign mark. This bowl has the mark of Qianlong, and it has the unmistakable patina and biscuit characteristics of genuine old imperial ware. I guarantee this is at least 1850 or earlier.

A nice pair of 19th century Chinese famille rose wine cups. Each cup bears auspicious symbols, a pair of fish for prosperity and other objects from the scholar's study. These fish are simply drawn and fun. These cups are actually quite popular in the study where friends would drink and compete in poetry couplets for example. 2.5" high and 2.25" diameter. A wonderful set of 3 nesting bowls in a classic Chinese famille rose palette. The design is that of a crowing rooster perched on a strange Suzhou scholar's rock and amidst a garden of spring peonies. Everything beautifully and meticulously hand painted with super detail. About 1880-1920, very fine white and transluscent porcelain. Private mark (see below) in red overglaze. A hexagonal famille rose serving bowl or altar bowl with the picture of a wonderful tiger ambling under a pine tree. Wave motif on the footrim. Turquoise interior and inside foot rim. Mark and period of Tongzhi (1862-1874). This was a tumultuous period in China and the treasury was pretty much empty. The porcelain tended to be rough, but often had a certain charm. And this tiger has got it!
