A wonderful 19-20th century Chinese tea set or wine set consisting of a teapot, 4 matching cups and a tray. Very nicely painted dragon and phoenix facing off with the flaming pearl of wisdom between them. Same motif on the little handless cups and the gently lobed tray. Reverse side of the teapot has a poem and the house signature. Backstamp of the Jiangxi porcelain maker, site of all the famous porcelain kilns in China. A rare Japanese export tray from the late Meiji (1868-1912) to early Taisho (1912-26) period. It is of a red cinnebar lacquer and deeply carved with medallions and rondels of decorative themes carved on stippled ground. The center oval is a very fanciful dragon with the pearl of wisdom. Two rondels show phoenixes; four depict lotus blossom in cross section and two are pomegranites I think. The bottom is of black lacquer (You see some green felt pads).
