A small well shaped Chinese scholar's rock (or viewing stone) with intriguing splashes of red. There is a conforming carved slate stand. Late 19th to early 20th century. Scholars used to contemplate over the rock and write poems in competition. About 8" wide, 7.5" high on stand. Very good condition, no cracks. Versatile size.

This image of the "Old Imperial Palace" is from the month series "Twelve Months of Kyoto" (Kyô-meishô jûnikagetsu), published 1945 by Uchida in Kyoto. A wonderful 19-20th century Chinese tea set or wine set consisting of a teapot, 4 matching cups and a tray. Very nicely painted dragon and phoenix facing off with the flaming pearl of wisdom between them. Same motif on the little handless cups and the gently lobed tray. Reverse side of the teapot has a poem and the house signature. Backstamp of the Jiangxi porcelain maker, site of all the famous porcelain kilns in China.
