A rare Japanese export tray from the late Meiji (1868-1912) to early Taisho (1912-26) period. It is of a red cinnebar lacquer and deeply carved with medallions and rondels of decorative themes carved on stippled ground. The center oval is a very fanciful dragon with the pearl of wisdom. Two rondels show phoenixes; four depict lotus blossom in cross section and two are pomegranites I think. The bottom is of black lacquer (You see some green felt pads).
