A fine early coin silver sifter or strainer by Curtis & Stevens in the early fiddle pattern. Due to the length it was most likely for cream or soup although it can easily be used for tea or perhaps as a sugar sifter. Neat monogram ""M from E"" on the back. Marks ""Curtis & Stevens"" & ""Fall River"". Curtis and Stevens were silversmith families active in Massachusetts and Connecticut early in the 19th century. This strainer is from the 1830s when Fall River and New Bedford areas were wealthy from whaling & seafaring.
7.3"" long no damage nice patina polishes beautifully. This is a pretty unusual form for early American silver. Search keys: American coin sterling silver" |
