Japanese Export Cinnebar Lacquer Tray -Dragon
A rare Japanese export tray from the late Meiji (1868-1912) to early Taisho (1912-26) period. It is of a red cinnebar lacquer and deeply carved with medallions and rondels of decorative themes carved on stippled ground. The center oval is a very fanciful dragon with the pearl of wisdom. Two rondels show phoenixes; four depict lotus blossom in cross section and two are pomegranites I think. The bottom is of black lacquer (You see some green felt pads). There are handles on the side and incised fret pattern on the high rim.

19" long by 14.5" wide 1.8" high rim. Very good condition with basically no damage to the lacquer. The Japanese did not make this type of deeply carved lacquer for long. Probably too much labor involved and the economy in the 20's and 30's was moving towards quite a different direction. This is an exceptional item from the estate of an old State Department officer who was stationed there.
