A large bowl from the Christie's 1986 auction of the Nanking (Hatcher) Cargo recovered from the 1752 shipwreck of the Dutch India Company ship in the South China Sea. The bowl interior has underglaze blue floral decorations typical of the late Ming (1368-1644)to Early Ching (1644-1911) period. (And the pattern area is pretty large. Most of the cargo has less decorations.) The exterior has a brownish enamel covering. Careful removal of this over glaze enamel usually reveal underglaze blue decorations. The original Christie's sale tag is still on the unmarked bottom.
7.8" diameter. Very good condition with no chips or hairline cracks. Nice ring when lightly tapped. A fine example of 18th century Chinese export ware with a famous history. It is living proof of the almost undisolvable qualities of antique Chinese underglaze porcelain. |
