A fine 19th century Chinese art tapestry/brocade done in the manner of a literati genre painting. The poem alludes to the pleasures and the freedom of enjoying the autumn pleasure on Feng Lai, a mythical Island over the ocean inhabited by immortal beings who have endless banquets and poetry contests. In folklore, Feng Lai was often thought to be Taiwan. The poem, foliage, colors and bats enrich each other in the allusions. Stitched signature and seal mark.
One way a weaver shows her virtuoso skills has been to do a painting. This was part of an old tradition, and the Empress Dowager Tzu-Hsi gave it prominence by bestowing imperial favor upon selected skilled embroiderers and weavers. This tapestry/brocade dates from that era, circa 1890. 16.5" x 33.5" similar to size of a painting. Very good condition considering the age, only a little loss in the lower right hand corner and some fraying of the right hand edge. The picture area has no damage. No other stains, thread unraveling or damage. The redish color is from taking the picture in the sunlight. Rare antique art tapestry/brocade. Ready to frame for a spectacular display! |
