An exceptional Chinese scholar's object in carved bamboo with high relief. It shows a group of scholars in a bamboo grove, some around a go game in progress, and some enjoying a scroll. Several of the bamboo in the foreground are fully reticulated openwork. This can be seen on the 2 edges of the close up picture and also in the last picture. A covered box is rare, it can hold ink cakes or other small objects. It can even be used for a tea caddy.
7" high and 6.8" by 5.7" oval top. Condition of the carvings very good. Bamboo has crack from age, often found this way due to age. |
