This is a fine Edo period (1603-1868)iron tsuba of a classic form . Flower & petal lacquer design on gold and iron, trimmed in brass. This one is both simple & elegant! The blossom in front is a kind of plum, (katsura). A few spare leaves falling on the back. Wonderful use of colors at once simple, bold and subtle. Lacquered tsubas are rare. 2.5" diameter. Very good condition. The best of these botanical designs are said to be like the Japanese haiku poem. Wonderful design! |
