A hexagonal famille rose serving bowl or altar bowl with the picture of a wonderful tiger ambling under a pine tree. Wave motif on the footrim. Turquoise interior and inside foot rim. Mark and period of Tongzhi (1862-1874). This was a tumultuous period in China and the treasury was pretty much empty. The porcelain tended to be rough, but often had a certain charm. And this tiger has got it! 7" wide and 3" high. Very good condition with no chips or hairlines or repairs. Structurally sound. Minor wear & some rubbing to the turquoise. An unbelievable tiger from the short reign of Emperor Tongzhi. ----------------- While the tiger is found somewhat regularly in paintings, it is quite rare on porcelain. The only other late Qing which I remember is a blue & white bowl with a large tiger in the Hongkong Museum with the mark of Jiangxi Porcelain Co., a government owned trading company established around 1880-1890. |
