| A nice pair of 19th century Chinese famille rose wine cups. Each cup bears auspicious symbols, a pair of fish for prosperity and other objects from the scholar's study. These fish are simply drawn and fun. These cups are actually quite popular in the study where friends would drink and compete in poetry couplets for example. 2.5" high and 2.25" diameter. One cup has inside repair with hairline showing (see picture). Overglazed red marks of Tongzhi reign, 1862-1874, and of that period. It was a time of improverished treasury. The scholar officials still could drink to forget their troubles. See my hexagonal altar bowl from the same era. | ||||||
