An early Chinese glazed ceramic bowl from the Sui (581-618 AD) dynasty shortly preceding Tang. The shape is that of an alms bowl (called ben) used by iterinant monks. It has the typical green glaze with a hint of yellow. Nice brown spotting. Spur marks inside from stacking in the kiln. Fun applied domestic animal head.
About 5.5" diameter and 2.3" high. Good condition save for a hairline (see picture). An unusual form and great for display. |
