This is a set of 3 Japanese temple bells each with an open mouthed active dragon dramatically set against a black ground. Thick lacquer work stands in relief. The metal is most likely brass, painted black inside. Each sounds a fine reverberating note. I'd say Meiji, maybe for export.
8.5", 7.7" and 5.8" diameters respectively. Some light wear as you can see from the picture, but they are all in good condition with no cracks or structural problems. One has the original hanging finial. |
