Qianlong Mark Period Stem Bowl Tazza Tibetan Script
An 18th century blue and white Chinese tazza or stem compote with Tibetan lanca script, imperial mark and period. Underglazed mark of Qianlong emperor (1736-1795). This would have been a gift from the Chinese Emperor to the Tibetan Dalai Lama in the annual imperial gift exchange (see historical note below).

6 1/4" top diameter, 5 1/4" high. Very good condition but for a faint hairline at rim (see pic). Christies New York, had such a bowl in 1995. And they are occasionally seen in their Hongkong sales rooms. Be sure to see my mark and period Yongzheng brush washer bowl with lanca script also listed now as well as my Kangxi brush washer.

Note: Lanca script Chinese imperial porcelain is much sought after. A Qianlong example of a stem cup is Lot# 785 of Sothey's London November 1999 sale.

Note: Qianlong's father Yongzhen (1723-1735, a warrior) considered the cost of the war in the south with today's Vietnam. He estimated that of a food train of 10 mules, at most one reached the army at the front. The policy from that time forward was to establish protectorate relationships with distant states. The annual ritual exchange of gifts renewed these relationships. With Tibet, it was elevated a level. Yongzhen apprenticed at a monastery as a youth. He acknowledged the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader while Tibet acknowledged him as the temporal Emperor. This relationship continued to the early 20th century. Gifts to Tibet often had lanca inscriptions.
