A fine example of the high quality which can be achieved in blue and white snuff bottles. Fun decoration of a "hu-ren" (tribal man) groom presenting a donkey to a couple of Chinese in Ming dynasty garb. Wonderful expression on the groom and the donkey. Fine porcelain biscuit. Mark of Yongzhen but 19th century for sure. Nice carnelian top of good color and translucency. Very nice detail.
3.3" high and nice bombe sides. Very good condition with no damage. Note: 1) Snuff bottles became popular in China beginning in the Qianlong era. Yongzhen or the earlier Kangxi marks are always apocryphal, indicating either 19th century or contemporary origin. The early Republic era about 1910 to 1950 fancied the Qianlong mark.
2) Shun-Tze 1644-1661; Kangxi 1662- 1722 |
