Fine Daoguan Tongzhi period blue and white cylindrical snuff bottle with a delicately painted monkey riding a galloping horse; a scene of the Monkey King from the Tales of the Western Journey. An older 19th century snuff bottle with rolled mouth rim with a circle and circles both outside and inside the footrim. Excellent quality biscuit and glaze. Nice shaped green top with finial.
2.5" high and 1" diameter. Very good condition with a flake on the footrim, no lines or repairs. picture shows one grain of grit on mouth rim. Note. Journey to the West is a popular "antique" folk tale of the Tang era monk Xuan Chuan in search of the true Budhist sutra scriptures. The Monkey King was his first and most powerful disciple whose mission was the protection of his master on a perilous journey. The Journey is a quest of vast dimensions in time, space, characters and imagination. Worth a read and easily accessible by google search on "Monkey King" or "Journey to the West".
