| . Feature Item: 17-18th Century Persian market Chinese Export Blue White Charger | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This is a huge antique Chinese export charger made for the Persian market with very characteristic blue and white geometric & floral decorations which cover the entire surface. This export market was vitally important to 15-18th century China. This charger dates to the Ming transitional period to early Qing (Ching) Kangxi. The cobalt compound, known as mohammedan blue, fired into that brilliant & prized underglazed blue. This chemical was imported from the Middle East dominated by Persia. And the Persian court in return prized the incomparable hard paste porcelain of China. The back of this charger is decorated with 4 traditional Chinese florals. And ------ most remarkable ------- is the double circle enclosing a symbol which could be arabic script. So this may very well have been an Imperial gift to the Persian court in an annual exchange of gifts or for some special occasion. 21.5" diameter, 3.3" high. Condition is very good. Some rim roughness, a couple of scratch marks (not hairlines) on the back. Otherwise no damage or repairs. Very heavy and thick porcelain with orange peel effect and thick glaze. Some rubbing to the glaze over time. Structurally sound, rings beautifully. All consistent with a genuine Ming charger of this size.
