Han Emperor Aidi, Dong Xian and "cut sleeve". 漢哀帝 董賢 斷袖之癖 ;

Pair of Jiaqing Imperial Mark and Period figural cups with essay about "passion of the cut sleeve", 18th century. with 4 character reign mark of Jiaqing, imperial mark and of the period winecups with Han dynasty historical figures and writings. Famille rose and excellent detail. The figures are in Tang or Han dynasty dress with matching classical anecdotes. Jiaqing was a conscientious and frugal ruler. The texts on these wine cups are cautionary allusions to decadent court life.
Snippet: One of the poems alludes to a story about the ancient Han Emperor Ai (Aidi 漢哀帝 27 BC–1 BC) who was a famous bi-sexual. Aidi woke up one day with the young man Dong Xian cradled on his arm sound asleep. So as not to disturb Dong, Aidi cut off his sleeve and slipped out to attend to his duties. The term "passion of the cut sleeve" came to be synonomous with male homosexual love. This is a popular Chinese folklore and this passage on the cup is from an ancient memoire. Aidi died young from ailments due to over indulgence. Dong and his wife commmited suicide under pressure from the new reign. It is a cautionary tale for the imperial court.

History snippet. Chinese palace porcelain gifts to the tribal leaders were prized possessions. They made special leather fitted boxes with leather straps to carry around in their nomadic journeys. I've seen one shaped to fit a stem bowl (tazza) such as the one here. These are exceptionally rare today.
