Antique Chinese Export 18th Century Russian Market St. Petersberg Charger
also, A Group of fine antique Rose Medallion and Blue and White plus other items for sale and useful facts.
| . REFERENCE ITEM. 1700s Famille Rose Chinese Export Russia Market Charger .
| This is a quite unusual one, a Chinese export charger for the Russian market. The center scene is a Russian countryside with the nobleman (said to be Peter the Great) towering over his serfs. A river in the background and church spires further back. The colors are muted and soft. The border is elaborate with thick white enamel, in a manner sometimes found on other early export porcelain. This is an early one, most likely 1775 or thereabouts. No marks at all. 15.5" diameter. No chips or cracks, only the usual wear. A little of the center background enamel may have been worn and someone retouched it with good matching of colors. Highlights not retouched. This is a one of a kind and very displayable 18th c Chinese export charger.

NOTE 2. The detail is quite remarkable. For example, the cross hatching on the buildings must have been done with "single strand" brushes (see the much enlarged detail pic). The quality of the painting resembles what is found in Chinese imperial ware. Early export ware were often contracted to private kilns some of which were also contractors for imperial ware, especially when quality was required.
